Creative Collaboration

So here’s what I want you to do. When you gather for worship, each one of you be prepared with something that will be useful for all: Sing a hymn, teach a lesson, tell a story, lead a prayer, provide an insight.”

I Corinthians 14:26 (the message)

Isn’t it great when this happens. Someone shares a song and someone else a bible verse or a dream or vision and it all fits together. There are times when we all seem to be on the same wavelength and you can feel God’s blessing in it all.

A few years ago I read a poem in the meeting. Someone commented that it would be great if the musicians could write music for the lyrics, and the lead guitarist went home and did just that. He added an Irish whistle which gave a Celtic feel and shared a rough recording with the other musicians. The whole thing snowballed until a full sound was achieved and a song was created. One girl was encouraged to play the whistle part which was great as she had not played for years. It was so wonderful to see how the whole group could be part of the creative process and I loved the fact that I had contributed to it by providing the lyrics.

This has given me fresh hope that the lyrics I love to write and simple tunes I had previously sung could be moulded into real music. I could not do it alone but together we can create a new song, a new sound. It could be a battle cry or a heartfelt plea, a shout of praise or love song. We need each other and this is not a negative thing, but a great fun and hard work too. Recording and mixing the tracks require skill if you want a copy of the music on cd or mp3 and this draws in even more people.

Maybe you have people around you to help you to be creative, why not seek them out, get together and encourage one another. Let’s create a new pool of resources by sharing our talents. Who knows where it could lead.
